It reflects the industrialization of the working-class Carver neighborhood and is comparable in scale, materials and function to commercial buildings already in the district. It is the only surviving historic building next to the district that was left outside its boundaries.","narrative":"A long brick and concrete laundry building stretches nearly two blocks along West Marshall Street in Richmond, between Hancock and Goshen Streets. Built in five connected sections between about 1915 and about 1980, it began as a plant for the T&E Laundry Company, formed by the merger of the Troy and Eagle steam laundries. Later additions included offices in the mid-1920s, a power plant around 1948, a large laundry hall around 1964 and more offices around 1980. The company chose the working-class Carver neighborhood partly to draw employees for its labor-intensive steam laundry, and its plant replaced a church and many nineteenth-century houses. The building was added to the Carver Residential Historic District because it had been left out of the original boundary and is the only surviving historic resource next to the district. It is valued for its utilitarian commercial architecture and its link to the neighborhood's industrial growth. The laundry operation left in 2005, and the building was then vacant.","period_of_significance":"1840-1940 (entire district)","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century American Movements: Commercial style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant/not in use; the laundry operation moved to Chesterfield County in 2005 and the building was sold to developers planning a sixty-unit apartment conversion.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.322209-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/70/6828/41682870/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/06000975.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000975/fc1891d5ab-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000975/fc1891d5ab-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Crazyale","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carver_residential.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Crazyale</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carver_residential.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"02000365","name":"Carver Residential Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/carver-residential-historic-district-02000365/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682870","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carver_Residential_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16825768"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/richmond/carver-residential-historic-district-boundary-increase-06000975/"}
