It is also significant for its association with the growth and development of the hamlet of Oak Hill. The building survives largely in its 1859 form, apart from the 1929 installation of memorial stained glass windows and interior updating.","narrative":"Built in 1859 on the north side of Main Street in the hamlet of Oak Hill, this Methodist Episcopal church is a roughly square, traditional meetinghouse with a heavy hand-hewn timber frame, clapboard siding, a fieldstone foundation and a full pediment broken by an engaged three-stage bell tower. The entrance has double-leaf doors set in a deep recess with pilasters and an entablature, typical of Greek Revival work. Inside, a square worship space holds two rows of pews, a raised dais with turned railing and a Greek Revival pilaster-and-entablature backdrop. Memorial stained glass windows, pews and lighting date from a 1929 updating. The congregation grew from circuit-rider services led by Reverend A. F. Selleck, who urged parishioners to buy a site and build; Stephen Osterhout and associates won the construction contract. The church is notable as a late and well-preserved example of Greek Revival design and for its link to Oak Hill's development as a mill and industrial hamlet.","period_of_significance":"1859-1929","architect_builder":"Stephen Osterhout and his associates (contract to build awarded to them)","architectural_style":"Mid 19th Century; Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in religious use as a church; the building survives largely in its 1859 form with minor changes such as 1929 memorial windows.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.589669-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06000972.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000972/851a741cae-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000972/851a741cae-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oak_Hill_Methodist_Episcopal_Church_Jul_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oak_Hill_Methodist_Episcopal_Church_Jul_10.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100001586","name":"Oak Hill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/oak-hill-historic-district-100001586/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318013","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oak_Hill_Methodist_Episcopal_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7073584"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/oak-hill-methodist-episcopal-church-06000972/"}
