It sits on a 101.5-acre parcel of former farmland.","why_significant":"The house is nominated as a highly intact example of Early Period cobblestone construction and vernacular farmhouse planning in northern Livingston County. It keeps a high degree of integrity of design, materials and craftsmanship, including simple black walnut Greek Revival woodwork. It is one of only two cobblestone buildings in the Town of Conesus and one of twenty-one in Livingston County.","narrative":"This cobblestone farmhouse on Federal Road in Conesus, Livingston County, was built in the mid to late 1830s, probably by Bethnel Payne, who may have built it before gaining title to the land in December 1838. The main block is one story and five bays wide, with a gable roof and a one-and-one-half story frame wing. Its walls are laid with field cobbles in horizontal rows, with sandstone quoins, sills and lintels. The finest masonry is on the west façade, and the rear wall is random fieldstone. Inside, a central vestibule is flanked by the original kitchen and a parlor, and the simple Greek Revival woodwork is unpainted black walnut. The property later passed to George F. Coe, who granted a railroad right-of-way in 1852. Two culverts and an embankment from that line survive on the parcel. The house is listed for its architecture as an intact Early Period cobblestone farmhouse, one of twenty-one in Livingston County.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1835 - ca. 1955","architect_builder":"Probably built by Bethnel Payne","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently in use as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.830598-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06000969.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000969/59ced6fe98-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000969/59ced6fe98-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PAYNE_COBBLESTONE_HOUSE,_CONESUS,_LIVINGSTON_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313359","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Payne_Cobblestone_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7156814"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/livingston-county/payne-cobblestone-house-06000969/"}
