It is also significant for commerce and social history as a continuously operated residential hotel, first built for the Bell House Boys bachelor fraternity. It reflects the residential hotel/apartment building type, uncommon in Atlanta.","narrative":"Standing at 683 Peachtree Street NE in Atlanta, across from the Fox Theater and beside the Georgian Terrace Hotel, this 12-story building opened in 1925 as the Carlton Apartments. Architects Pringle and Smith designed it in the Georgian Revival style, with red brick walls, limestone and terra cotta ornament, a central entrance and a symmetrical facade. The top three floors were built for the Bell House Boys, a social fraternity of bachelors that traces back to a boarding house run by Emma Bell. After the fraternity left in 1929, the whole building became a hotel, later called the Cox-Carlton, and it kept operating through several owners, including a period as a hotel for Southern Railway employees. It was listed for its architecture, for its role as an unusual residential hotel in Atlanta, and for its social history. A rehabilitation completed in 2004 reopened it as the Hotel Indigo.","period_of_significance":"1925-1956","architect_builder":"Pringle and Smith (Robert Smith Pringle and Francis Palmer Smith), architects, of Atlanta, GA; The Foundation Company of New York, builder","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Georgian Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated with investment tax credits and reopened in October 2004 as the Hotel Indigo; in use as a hotel with about 140 rooms advertised.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.128715-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/06000960.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000960/32a3140ec0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000960/32a3140ec0-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carlton_Apartment_Hotel,_Atlanta,_1926.png\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carlton_Apartment_Hotel,_Atlanta,_1926.png"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208142","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_Indigo_Atlanta_Midtown","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16995918"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/fulton-county/cox-carlton-hotel-06000960/"}
