Hensley.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a rare intact example of a cross-plan dwelling with Queen Anne influences and a unique octagonal floor plan formed by six rooms and four porches. It is the only known octagonal-plan dwelling in Bay City and one of few modest Queen Anne influenced houses there to retain historic integrity. It is significant at the local level for architecture.","narrative":"Built in 1905 on Sixth Street in Bay City, this one-story wood house combines a common cross-gable plan with an unusual octagonal layout. Architect Henry Hensley designed it for his brother Alexander D. Hensley and Maggie Hensley, using materials from the Alamo Lumber Company. Four porches and six rooms together form the octagon, which is visible only in the floor plan. A central living room with eight doors and no windows opens to each porch. The exterior shows restrained Queen Anne detailing, including carved gable ends, turned porch posts, brackets and diamond-patterned shingles. The Gusman family bought the house in 1919 and kept it until 2002. Changes were limited to concrete porch flooring in 1930 and a small rear bathroom and service porch added about 1925. The house was listed for architecture at the local level because it is a rare surviving cross-plan dwelling in Bay City and the only known one with an octagonal plan.","period_of_significance":"1905","architect_builder":"Architect: Henry Hensley; Builders: Alamo Lumber Co.","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Preserved in good condition with a very high degree of integrity; currently used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:24.108738-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/9729/40972950/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/06000927.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000927/3174c6c1f7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000927/3174c6c1f7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"25or6to4","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hensley-Gusman_House,_Bay_City,_TX.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">25or6to4</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hensley-Gusman_House,_Bay_City,_TX.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972950","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hensley%E2%80%93Gusman_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5731370"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/matagorda-county/hensley-gusman-house-06000927/"}
