It was first built c. 1737 and reworked c. 1810 and c. 1867, with a c. 1840 frame house, a well, a garage and a memorial plaque on the property.","why_significant":"The nomination cites the house for its architecture, showing 18th-century, Federal-period and mid-19th-century Picturesque work in one building. It is also significant for exploration/settlement, as an Onderdonk family farmhouse tied to sandstone quarrying, and for Revolutionary War associations including the 1783 Washington-Carleton meeting.","narrative":"Close to the west bank of the Hudson River in Piermont, this sandstone house began as a c. 1737 dwelling built by the Onderdonk family. It was substantially reworked c. 1810 into a five-bay, center-passage house with a three-bay wing, and updated again c. 1867 with Picturesque interior finishes such as heavily moulded doors, casings and mantels. Some earlier fabric survives, including hand-hewn beams from the first house and a Federal-style mantel. The property also holds a c. 1840 frame house, a well, a non-contributing garage and a bronze plaque placed in 1958. The Onderdonks came to the area partly for sandstone quarrying. Family tradition says the house was struck by cannon fire from the H.M.S. Vulture in 1777. A plaque marks the 1783 landing and meeting of George Washington and British General Guy Carleton nearby. The house is listed for its architecture and its role in settlement, with a period of significance from c. 1737 to c. 1870. It is currently vacant.","period_of_significance":"c. 1737- c. 1870","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial; Early Republic: Federal; Mid 19th Century: Picturesque","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.465547-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06000890.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000890/33227e4a4a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000890/33227e4a4a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ONDERDONK_HOUSE,_PIERMONT,_ROCKLAND_COUNTY,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321474","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onderdonk_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7092167"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/rockland-county/onderdonk-house-06000890/"}
