The architect or engineer is unknown. The 0.67-acre site also holds a caboose and a dining car.","why_significant":"The depot is significant under Criterion A as Rockdale's main transportation gateway to the wider world in the first half of the 20th century. Under Criterion C it is an excellent local example of early 20th-century railroad architecture, mixing Renaissance Revival and Prairie School elements. Its Renaissance Revival lantern is uncommon among surviving Texas depots.","narrative":"Built in 1906 by the International & Great Northern Railroad, this brick passenger depot on North Main Street in Rockdale replaced an earlier, decrepit station that local newspaper had campaigned to see replaced. The Latin-cross building has a waiting-room wing, an agent's office, and a separate baggage wing divided by a breezeway. Its hipped slate roof carries an octagonal lantern, reconstructed in 2003 after the railroad removed the original around 1936. Inside, two equal waiting rooms reflect the racial segregation required in Southern depots of the period. Passenger service ended in 1970, and the building later served as feed storage before the local historical society bought it in 1999 to create a museum. A caboose and a streamlined dining car are displayed beside it. The depot is valued as the town's historic link to the outside world and as a local example of early twentieth-century railroad architecture, blending Renaissance Revival and Prairie School features.","period_of_significance":"1906-1956","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Renaissance Revival/Eclectic; Late 19th and Early 20th Century American Movements: Prairie School","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The exterior has been restored to its original appearance and the interior is being adaptively rehabilitated as a museum; current function is listed as work in progress.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.3745-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/9730/40973050/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/06000824.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000824/204c171dc2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000824/204c171dc2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jim Evans","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:International_%26_Great_Northern_Railroad_Passenger_Depot_--_Rockdale,_Texas.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim Evans</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:International_%26_Great_Northern_Railroad_Passenger_Depot_--_Rockdale,_Texas.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40973050","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110002651"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/milam-county/international-and-great-northern-railroad-passenger-depot-06000824/"}
