The earliest log section dates to about 1759, with a brick wing added in 1830 and a major remodeling around 1850.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion C in architecture as a rare surviving example of an evolved eighteenth-century log dwelling. Its log core, probably built for James Crumley, was expanded by the Lynn and Lodge families in the typical Shenandoah Valley manner of enlarging small dwellings for growing families and farm activities. Few such log structures survive today.","narrative":"Located about nine miles northwest of Winchester, this farmhouse on Apple Pie Ridge Road grew in three stages. A 1½-story log section, probably built around 1759 for James Crumley, forms the core. William Lynn, a farmer and horse breeder, added a two-story, four-bay brick wing in 1830, with two front doors and Federal-style mantels. Around 1850, after the Lodge family acquired the farm, the log section was raised to two full stories and a front porch unified the two parts. The remaining five acres of the original 135-acre farm hold a log meat house, a brick granary, a late-nineteenth-century corn crib and the stone foundation of a barn. Modern rear additions were made in 1987 and 1994. The house is recognized for architecture because it shows how a modest eighteenth-century log dwelling was enlarged over time, and because few surviving examples of such early log houses remain in the area.","period_of_significance":"circa 1759-1885","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial; Federal; Other: Vernacular","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single dwelling with agricultural outbuildings; the brick granary is in poor condition and near collapse, and its owners are considering restoration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.298534-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/88/6807/41680788/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/06000806.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000806/a8b1ce9285-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000806/a8b1ce9285-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ.
