Its complex plan and late 19th-century vernacular form illustrate residential design on Martha's Vineyard. It retains a high level of integrity and has changed little since the early 20th century.","narrative":"Perched on the windswept moors above the Gay Head Cliffs at the western end of South Road in Aquinnah, this shingled house was built or assembled between 1890 and 1897 for Edwin DeVries Vanderhoop. It consists of two offset Cape-style blocks with steep gable roofs, wide cornices and corbelled brick chimneys, joined by a cross-gabled connector and surrounded by porches. Inside, the plan shows signs of having been put together from separate building units. Vanderhoop, born in 1848, was a whaling captain, the only Wampanoag elected to the state legislature, and the town enumerator for the 1900 census. The house stayed in his family for generations and was used as a home for more than a century. It is valued for its link to the Vanderhoop family of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head, for its place in local social life, and as a well-preserved example of late 19th-century vernacular architecture on Martha's Vineyard. It is being rehabilitated as a museum and community center.","period_of_significance":"Circa 1890/97 - 1956","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"No style (vernacular)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition and undergoing rehabilitation for new use as a museum and community center; it had over a century of continuous residential use.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.033345-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/6/7946/63794606/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/06000784.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000784/086096b34e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000784/086096b34e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edwin_DeVries_Vanderhoop_Homestead,_Aquinnah_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Edwin_DeVries_Vanderhoop_Homestead,_Aquinnah_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794606","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_DeVries_Vanderhoop_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5346351"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/dukes-county/vanderhoop-edwin-devries-homestead-06000784/"}
