It is significant under Criterion A for its role in the local milling economy and community life, including serving as the first voting precinct in the area. It is significant under Criterion C for its heavy timber construction and period building techniques.","narrative":"Graves Mill is a gristmill complex set on a terraced four-acre parcel among the Blue Ridge Mountains, north of Wolftown in Madison County, Virginia. The three-story heavy timber mill, built circa 1798 by Thomas Graves and his sons, probably stands on the foundation of an earlier mill from about 1745 built by David Jones. It was originally five stories and was later reduced to three. The mill has a post-and-beam frame joined with wooden drawbore pins, riven clapboard siding, and a stone foundation more than eight feet high. Nearby are a miller's house, which incorporates a circa 1792 log school moved to the site around 1850, and an early twentieth-century barn. The mill operated until about 1940, first as a flour and corn mill and later as a corn mill. It also served as the area's first voting precinct, and its voting booth survives. It is listed as the only surviving gristmill in the vicinity and for its role in local industry and community life.","period_of_significance":"circa 1745-1940","architect_builder":"David Jones; Thomas Graves & Sons","architectural_style":"OTHER: Late-18th century vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The mill is described as dilapidated, with a collapsed stone foundation section at the northwest corner. The miller's house is a residence, the barn is used for storage, and the mill itself is listed as vacant/not in use.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.359577-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/61/6818/41681861/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/06000754.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000754/82469cfcc5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000754/82469cfcc5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Gauemj","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Graves_Mill_Madison_County_Virginia-1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Gauemj</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Graves_Mill_Madison_County_Virginia-1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681861","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graves_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712384"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/madison-county/graves-mill-06000754/"}
