Its oldest building is Fountain Hill House, a rubble stone dwelling built around 1791 by Joshua Fletcher and later enlarged in 1974-75. The main residence, a stone Colonial Revival house completed in 1935, was designed by Washington architect Waddy B. Wood for Admiral Cary T. Grayson, built by William Conquest, and set within a walled courtyard garden by landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman. Around 1903 the farm gained broodmare stables, stud barns, training and implement stables, a hay shed and tenant houses that supported its breeding business. Grayson bred and raced thoroughbreds, and his family continued the operation after his death in 1938. The property was listed for its architecture, landscape architecture and agricultural history, with a period of significance running from about 1791 to 1956.","period_of_significance":"circa 1791-1956","architect_builder":"Waddy Butler Wood, Architect; Ellen Biddle Shipman, Landscape Architect; William Conquest, Builder","architectural_style":"Federal (Fountain Hill House); Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a horse farm and residence; historic functions continue as single dwelling and agricultural facilities.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.528601-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/51/6806/41680651/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/06000753.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000753/97203d8cef-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000753/97203d8cef-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BLUE_RIDGE_FARM,_UPPERVILLE,_FAUQUIER_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680651","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Ridge_Farm_(Upperville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712045"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/fauquier-county/blue-ridge-farm-06000753/"}
