The nominated property also includes a c. 1952 storage shed and the c. 1953 Newtown Community House.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a good example of a simple, utilitarian rural school with four classrooms around a central assembly room and little ornament. It also represents public education in a rural area, having been built by Milton County in 1929 to consolidate four one-room schools. It was the last school built by Milton County before the county merged into Fulton County in 1932.","narrative":"Newtown Elementary School is a one-story, H-shaped brick building at the crossroads of Old Alabama Road and Haynes Bridge Road in north Fulton County, Georgia. Built in 1929 by the Milton County Board of Education, it replaced four one-room schools, Teddymore, Riverside, Newtown and Seven Branches. Four classrooms flank a central assembly room, and two grades were taught in each classroom. Funded by a $7,000 bond issue and on land donated by local men, the school was the last built by Milton County before the 1932 merger into Fulton County. It operated as a school until 1980. The plain wood-frame building with brick veneer retains much of its original form and interior detail, including cloakrooms, paneled doors and pine finishes. A c. 1952 storage shed and the 1953 Newtown Community House, built by residents with county help, share the site. It was listed for its role in rural education and as a modest example of Depression-era school design.","period_of_significance":"1929-1956","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The school closed in 1980 and was later used as a maintenance facility. The buildings sat empty from 1991 to 2003 and were vandalized. The 1929 building was secured in 2003 and awaited rehabilitation, while the community house is still used for meetings and events.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.075471-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/06000739.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000739/0a5f100a5b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000739/0a5f100a5b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rheave","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newton_Elementary.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Rheave</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Newton_Elementary.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93208270","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newtown_Elementary_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q104903325"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/fulton-county/newtown-elementary-school-06000739/"}
