It is also presented as tied to the commercial and medical development of the town, and as the only historic hotel building still standing in Montgomery County.","narrative":"Three-story brick building on a sloping corner lot at North Main and Smitherman Streets in Troy, built in 1908 and enlarged the following year by physician Alexander F. Thompson. Its smooth pressed-brick facade, brick panels, and molded metal cornices with urn motifs reflect the Classical Revival style. Three storefronts carry cast iron pilasters and columns from the Geo. L. Mesker & Co. foundry in Evansville, Indiana, while the lobby has patterned tile floors, tile wainscoting, and pressed metal ceilings. Built as a drug store, grocery, and furniture business, the building later housed a bank, clothing stores, and a medical clinic, and in 1925 Thompson converted the upper floors into a twenty-seven-bedroom hotel. The property is significant for its role in the commerce and medicine of early to mid-twentieth-century Troy and for its architectural design, which the nomination considers the best Classical Revival example in the town.","period_of_significance":"1908-1956","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The hotel operated until about 1970 and was more of a boarding house at the end.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:42.612879-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/17/7214/47721417/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/06000720.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000720/eb06ca7124-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000720/eb06ca7124-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HOTEL_TROY,_MONTGOMERY_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721417","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_Troy","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19462419"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/montgomery-county/hotel-troy-06000720/"}
