Shonen.","why_significant":"The nomination finds the church locally significant under Criterion C as a good example of Carpenter Gothic architecture. It shows board-and-batten construction, Gothic-arched openings, bargeboards, and an emphasis on vertical lines and patterned woodwork. It also retains much original material inside and out.","narrative":"Standing one block east of Perry's former business district, this wooden church at 102 Main Street was completed on January 1, 1880, replacing an 1857 meetinghouse on the same lot. Contractor E. Shonen built it for a congregation organized around 1837, and no architect or plan source is recorded. The rectangular building rests on a limestone foundation and is clad in board-and-batten siding. Its front is dominated by a three-part steeple with a tower, lantern and spire, and every door and window has a Gothic arch. Raised wood trim and bargeboards repeat the Gothic gable and arch motifs. Inside are the original pine floors, plaster walls, wainscoting, pressed tin ceiling, oil lamps and carved walnut-trimmed pews. Changes since construction have been modest, including added chimney extensions, a basement furnace, bathrooms and removable Sunday school partitions. The church was listed for its architecture as a locally notable example of Carpenter Gothic design.","period_of_significance":"1880","architect_builder":"Shonen, E., Builder","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Gothic (Carpenter Gothic)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; the form notes peeling paper and failing paint, flashing and roofing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.244667-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/97/8938/28893897/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/06000675.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000675/dadaf7a050-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000675/dadaf7a050-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jon Roanhaus","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Church_Of_Christ2_NRHP_06000675_Pike_County,_IL.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jon Roanhaus</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Church_Of_Christ2_NRHP_06000675_Pike_County,_IL.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893897","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_Christ_(Perry,_Illinois)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5116840"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/pike-county/church-of-christ-06000675/"}
