Under Criterion C it is one of the few Mission Revival-era buildings remaining in the city. With its outbuildings and parks, it conveys the period when the railroad was a vital local industry.","narrative":"Santa Barbara's Southern Pacific depot, at 209 State Street, is a Mission Revival railroad station designed by architect Francis W. Wilson and completed in 1905. Its poured concrete walls are covered in ochre plaster under red terra cotta tile roofs, and an oversized arch faces the tracks. Inside, the finishes follow the Craftsman style, with oak furnishings, tile wainscoting and plaster reliefs of Padre Junipero Serra and a vaquero. A brick Railway Express Agency office from 1906 and three landscaped parks with palms and lantana hedges complete the site. The station served as an important stop on the Southern Pacific route and supported tourism and industry in the city. It is also one of the few Mission Revival-era buildings left in Santa Barbara, and Wilson's only work in that style. The City of Santa Barbara restored the station in 1999 to its appearance of about 1920, reversing decades of alterations.","period_of_significance":"1905-1949","architect_builder":"Wilson, Francis W.","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century Revivals/Mission/Spanish Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The station, former Railway Express building and three parks are described as in excellent condition after a 1999 restoration and rehabilitation by the City of Santa Barbara.
