Tilden in the Cemetery of the Evergreens, a rural cemetery in New Lebanon, Columbia County, New York. It was begun in 1895 and completed the following year.","why_significant":"The monument is presented as an outstanding example of Beaux-Arts inspired Neoclassical funerary art by architect Ernest Flagg, and was his first identified commission after returning from training in Paris. It also commemorates Tilden, a New York governor and reformer who won the 1876 popular vote for president but lost in the electoral college.","narrative":"Set on a circular mound at the center of a graded square plot in the Cemetery of the Evergreens, this monument marks the burial place of Samuel J. Tilden, born in New Lebanon in 1814. Tilden was a New York governor and reformer who broke up the Tweed ring and the Canal Ring, and who won the popular vote in the 1876 presidential election but lost in the electoral college. The monument centers on a nine and one-half ton granite sarcophagus on a four-step platform, carved with egg-and-dart ornament, lion's head and garland friezes, and anthemion motifs. A cast-bronze gate opens to three brick-arched crypts, and the center one holds Tilden's remains. Its cornice carries the inscription \"I still trust the people.\" Ernest Flagg, newly returned from studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, designed it in 1895-96, and it was his first identified commission after returning. It remains largely intact despite vandalized wreaths and weathering.","period_of_significance":"1895","architect_builder":"Flagg, Ernest; architect","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Substantially intact since construction, apart from lost bronze wreaths (vandalized, now in storage), removed evergreen screening, mortar loss and some stone weathering.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.453074-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06000573.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000573/0fee6f1bf9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000573/0fee6f1bf9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Billmckern","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel_J._Tilden_memorial.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Billmckern</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Samuel_J._Tilden_memorial.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317095","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gov._Samuel_J._Tilden_Monument","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5588535"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/columbia-county/tilden-gov-samuel-j-monument-06000573/"}
