It is also significant under Criterion C as a highly intact early twentieth-century Colonial Revival house and one of the surviving pre-1911 buildings that may have been designed and built by the land company.","narrative":"Built in 1907 at 50 South Drive, this two-and-a-half-story Colonial Revival house was among the first homes in Plandome, a suburb laid out by the Plandome Land Company on the Manhasset peninsula. Almeron Smith, a Queens school principal, and his wife Olive bought the lot as part of a company offer that favored teachers. The house has a cross-gabled roof, a wrap-around porch with turned balustrade, yellow asbestos shingle siding, and mostly original six-over-one windows. Inside, original oak floors, moldings, built-in seating, pocket doors and an art glass stair window survive. A 1932 garage contributes to the property, while a 1955 pool does not. The house reflects the early twentieth-century shift of Long Island's north shore from farmland to commuter suburbs. The Smiths supported the village's 1911 incorporation, and Olive Smith took part in women's clubs. It is one of roughly a dozen intact pre-1911 homes remaining in the village.","period_of_significance":"1907-1949","architect_builder":"Plandome Land Company","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Historic and current function is private residence; the house retains a high degree of integrity despite a 1960s kitchen wing and a replaced living room mantel.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.909264-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06000569.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000569/162a361c9e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000569/162a361c9e-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Jim.henderson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Almeron_%26_Olive_Smith_House_jeh.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jim.henderson</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Almeron_%26_Olive_Smith_House_jeh.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319209","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almeron_and_Olive_Smith_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4733791"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/smith-almeron-and-olive-house-06000569/"}
