It is also one of the last surviving reminders of Titusville, the woolen mill hamlet founded by Elias Titus and his family, whose mill and most related buildings are gone.","narrative":"Built around 1840 on Titusville Road in the Town of LaGrange, this Greek Revival house was erected by local builders for Elias Titus, who ran a woolen mill on nearby Wappinger Creek. Its front is a tetrastyle Ionic portico with a pediment and a large triangular window. The frame house has a two-and-a-half-story main block and a one-and-a-half-story kitchen wing. Inside are eared door and window casings, heavy moldings, black marble mantels, a cantilevered stair, and Ionic pilasters framing the opening between the parlors. Vinyl siding added in 1991 was fitted carefully over the original clapboard, and later additions have been small. The mill prospered during the Civil War, when demand for wool goods was high, and the Titus family built more than a dozen houses and a school for workers. The mill burned in the 1890s. This house and two others are the main surviving traces of the hamlet, which makes the property important both for its architecture and as a record of that community.","period_of_significance":"c. 1840-1880","architect_builder":"Unknown (built by local builders)","architectural_style":"Mid 19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; vinyl siding added in 1991 over original clapboard, with a few small additions and an enclosed west porch.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.449686-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06000568.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000568/47dbbc7176-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000568/47dbbc7176-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Pksherpa","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elias_Titus_House_170_Titusville_Rd_Red_Oaks_Mill_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Pksherpa</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Elias_Titus_House_170_Titusville_Rd_Red_Oaks_Mill_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317496","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elias_Titus_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5360618"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/dutchess-county/titus-elias-house-06000568/"}
