It is also significant as a largely intact Second Empire residence with later Colonial Revival and Queen Anne modifications. The nomination argues for national significance.","narrative":"Built in 1880 as the parsonage for the Methodist Episcopal Church of the Nyacks, this house at 131 South Broadway in South Nyack is a wood-frame Second Empire residence with a slate-clad mansard roof. Around 1910 it was enlarged on the north side and updated with Colonial Revival and some Queen Anne touches, while much of the original plan and finishes survive inside, including plaster walls, period doors, stair details and mantels. A small garage was added about 1958. The house is listed chiefly for its association with novelist Carson McCullers, a prominent figure in mid-twentieth-century American literature, who lived and worked here despite long struggles with serious illness. During her time in the house she completed The Member of the Wedding, The Ballad of the Sad Café and Clock Without Hands, along with stories, essays and poetry. Its largely intact architecture adds a second layer of significance.","period_of_significance":"1880-1954","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Second Empire, Queen Anne; Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Colonial Revival","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as multiple dwelling; a small landscaped garden was added for visitors wishing to pay respects to McCullers.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.07683-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06000562.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000562/4579540a8e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000562/4579540a8e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthNyackNY_CarsonMcCullersHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SouthNyackNY_CarsonMcCullersHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321466","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carson_McCullers_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5046947"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/rockland-county/mccullers-carson-house-06000562/"}
