The original western section dates to c. 1760 and the eastern wing to c. 1795.","why_significant":"The mansion is significant for its architecture as a blend of early Georgian/traditional English and Georgian/Federal styles with very fine details. It was built by ironmasters James Old and Robert Coleman and their heirs, and is linked to the Speedwell Forge iron operation. Its interior woodwork and floor plans are regarded as very fine examples of the region's Georgian style.","narrative":"Built in two sections on the east bank of Hammer Creek, the Speedwell Forge Mansion is a two-and-a-half-story stone house. Its western section was begun around 1760 by ironmaster James Old, who ran a bar iron forge on the site. Around 1795 Robert Coleman added an eastern wing with finer brownstone ashlar, an arched Federal motif and a double-pile plan. The interior keeps raised-panel wainscot, corner cupboards, marbleized mantelpieces and a carved hall entablature. The house combines early Georgian and Georgian/Federal features and is regarded as a fine example of the style in Pennsylvania. Four outbuildings, including a stone summer kitchen and paymaster's office, share the same period. The forge itself has not survived above ground. The house is the main surviving record of the Coleman iron family's rise in the region.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian; Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The mansion has been unoccupied and neglected for some years; the current owner has planned restoration using the Federal Rehabilitation Investment Tax Credit program.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:10:27.214741-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/06000429.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000429/3aa2852eec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000429/3aa2852eec-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SPEEDWELL_FORGE_MANSION,_LANCASTER_COUNTY,_PA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71995429","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speedwell_Forge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7575702"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/lancaster-county/speedwell-forge-mansion-06000429/"}
