It retains much original fabric despite use as a garage and a 1964 restoration. Criteria Consideration B applies because the building was moved.","narrative":"Built in 1794-1795 by the Town of Woburn and later passed to the newly incorporated Town of Burlington, this one-room schoolhouse at 106 Bedford Street served rural Massachusetts children for about a century. Originally at Burlington Center, it was moved in 1839 to serve the western part of town and remained a school until about 1897. A front-gable roof with Greek Revival cornice returns was added in 1874-1875. In the early twentieth century it was altered for use as a private garage. Facing demolition, it was bought and restored in 1964 by volunteers who formed the Burlington Historical Society, working from historic photographs to rebuild the façade and vestibule. The interior keeps its wainscoting, blackboards, plastered walls, cast iron stove and wide pine floor. The building is listed for its role in local education history and as a surviving example of a Federal period schoolhouse. Its move in 1839 is noted as a consideration.","period_of_significance":"1795-1897","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal; Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Restored by the Burlington Historical Society in 1964 and used as a community museum (West School Museum).","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.134447-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/63/7958/63795863/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/06000398.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000398/17edf024d3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000398/17edf024d3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:West_School,_Burlington_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:West_School,_Burlington_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795863","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_School_(Burlington,_Massachusetts)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7986438"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/west-school-06000398/"}
