It began as a ca. 1810 one-room log dwelling and was enlarged in later phases.","why_significant":"It is the only known antebellum log house standing in Chowan County and illustrates three vernacular building traditions of eastern North Carolina: the one-room log house, the coastal cottage, and the later passage-plan remodeling that joined the kitchen to the main house. It also served as the Rockyhock post office from 1894 to 1906, reflecting the community's cotton-era prosperity and steamboat links.","narrative":"Set in farmland near the Chowan River, this one-and-a-half story house in northwest Chowan County grew in three stages. It began about 1810 as a one-room log dwelling, roughly fifteen feet square, with logs hewn on the interior face. Twenty to thirty years later, one log wall was removed and the remaining walls were folded into a hall-and-parlor house with an engaged porch and rear shed rooms, a form known regionally as a coastal cottage. Around 1900 a partition created a central stair passage, and the old detached kitchen was joined to the house as a dining room, with a new kitchen added behind. It is the only known antebellum log house in Chowan County. The Jones family farmed about one hundred acres here. From 1894 to 1906 the house also held the Rockyhock post office, where mail arriving by steamboat was sorted into pigeonholes in the front hall. A family cemetery and a ca. 1900 outbuilding remain on the property.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1810, ca. 1830-1840, 1894-1906","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Other: Vernacular Coastal Cottage","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Rental farm property with a current single-dwelling use; the form notes a small barn was destroyed by Hurricane Isabel in 2004 and that two missing porch posts will be replicated.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.176099-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/15/7196/47719615/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/06000340.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000340/8fe18fdaed-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000340/8fe18fdaed-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Ddoc529","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cullen_and_Elizabeth_Jones_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ddoc529</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cullen_and_Elizabeth_Jones_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719615","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cullen_and_Elizabeth_Jones_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q18152775"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/chowan-county/jones-cullen-and-elizabeth-house-06000340/"}
