The form dates it to about 1910, though it was purportedly built in 1897.","why_significant":"It was the home of suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt from 1919 to 1928, the years when the Nineteenth Amendment was passed and ratified. It is also argued to be a fine example of Arts and Crafts architecture in Westchester County. The form also notes the house is highly intact inside and out.","narrative":"Juniper Ledge is a two-and-one-half-story Arts and Crafts house on a wooded four-acre hillside at 20 Ryder Road in Briarcliff Manor, Westchester County. It has a random-coursed fieldstone first story, wood-shingled upper floors, a high-pitched gable roof with clipped ends and deep eaves. Inside, simple Classical details include a pilastered dining room mantel and a staircase with a Doric newel post. The form dates the house to about 1910, and the architect is unknown. Suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt lived here from 1919 to 1928. During those years the Nineteenth Amendment was passed and ratified in 1920, she helped organize the League of Women Voters, and she founded the National Committee on the Cause and Cure of War. A two-story addition made during her stay enlarged the living room. The property is recognized for its link to Catt's political leadership and as a well-preserved regional example of Arts and Crafts design. A garage and swimming pool are later additions.","period_of_significance":"c. 1910, 1919-1928","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Arts and Crafts","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling; the main house is highly intact, with a small addition from Catt's occupancy and minor later alterations. The garage and swimming pool are noncontributing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.35652-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06000336.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000336/ef976e95d8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000336/ef976e95d8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Elisa.rolle","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carrie_Chapman_Catt_House,_New_Castle,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Elisa.rolle</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Carrie_Chapman_Catt_House,_New_Castle,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322981","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrie_Chapman_Catt_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5046214"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/westchester-county/catt-carrie-chapman-house-06000336/"}
