It sits on a 9.7-acre parcel beside the Wallkill River.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is historically significant for its link to the Bodine family, early settlers of the Walden-Montgomery area, and one of the earliest surviving frame dwellings nearby. It is also architecturally significant as a vernacular Italianate updating of an earlier farm dwelling.","narrative":"Overlooking the Wallkill River just north of the Village of Walden, this farmhouse began as a modest one-and-one-half-story timber-frame dwelling with a kitchen wing, thought to date to about 1769 and believed to have been built by Peter Bodine. The frame follows traditional Dutch practice, with hewn, pegged H-shaped bents. Around 1860, during the ownership of Hiley Bodine Terbell and her husband Josephus Terbell, the house was widened and raised to two full stories. It gained a hipped roof, a cupola, paired scrolled brackets, a verandah and a center-hall plan. Wide eighteenth-century floorboards and the kitchen wing's brick hearth survive inside. The property is significant for its connection to the Bodine family, among the earliest settlers of the Walden-Montgomery area, and as one of the earliest surviving frame houses in the vicinity. It also illustrates how mid-nineteenth-century fashion led owners to remake older dwellings in the Italianate style.","period_of_significance":"c. 1769-c. 1860","architect_builder":"Peter Bodine is believed to have erected the original core; no architect is named.","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling; the form says the current owners carried out an extensive restoration of a house that had suffered deferred maintenance. A modern restaurant-bar and a shed stand on the parcel as noncontributing resources.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.61928-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06000334.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000334/f4b88df2a9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000334/f4b88df2a9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bodine_Farmhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bodine_Farmhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320582","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodine_Farmhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4936622"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/bodine-farmhouse-06000334/"}
