The 1886 house is an intact, well-preserved example of work by local house-builder Lawson Henderson Stowe, who fitted bracketed Italianate detail onto the traditional two-story Piedmont farmhouse. Together with the earlier dwelling and the log and frame outbuildings, it is an important surviving Gaston County farmstead that was home to four generations of farmers from 1852 to 1965.","narrative":"Craig Farmstead is a 19.20-acre farm complex in southeastern Gaston County, North Carolina, where rolling pasture and woodland still surround a cluster of farm buildings. The farm dates to 1852, when William Moore Craig bought land and built a modest two-room frame house. In 1886 the family completed a two-story Italianate farmhouse built by local house-builder Lawson Henderson Stowe, with bracketed eaves, decorated porches, a center stair hall and eight mantels. Surviving lumber and millwork bills document its construction. Around the houses stand a privy, meat and well house, poultry houses, corn crib and a barn combining log and frame construction. Four generations of Craigs farmed here between 1852 and 1965, and the last family resident left the main house in 1998. The property is recognized locally for the intact Stowe-built house and for the farmstead as a whole, which preserves its arrangement of domestic and agricultural buildings.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Lawson Henderson Stowe (builder of the 1886 house)","architectural_style":"Italianate; also single-pen log barn, double-pen barn, double-pen crib","criteria":[],"status_note":"Listed as vacant/not in use; the last family resident left the main house in 1998, though the owners maintain it well and the outbuildings are in varying states of deterioration.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.921901-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/71/7203/47720371/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/06000292.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720371","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Farmstead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19461185"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/gaston-county/craig-farmstead-06000292/"}
