A carriage barn/garage and an icehouse stand on the same half-acre lot.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion C as a substantially intact, representative example of vernacular, Queen Anne-inspired residential construction in Old Forge. It reflects regional building practice from the community's earliest period of permanent settlement. It was also the home and business office of George Goodsell, a prominent local builder, and the complex retains its original outbuildings.","narrative":"Built in 1899-1900 on Main Street in Old Forge, this 2 1/2-story wood frame house reflects the vernacular Queen Anne style in a modest form. It has a steeply pitched gable roof suited to heavy snow, a stone foundation, a wraparound porch with turned posts and balustrade, and an interior that keeps its original room layout and varnished woodwork. Behind it stand a carriage barn and a small icehouse, the only known surviving example of its kind in the hamlet. George Goodsell, a guide, carpenter and building contractor, built the house for his family and ran his business from an office on the first floor. He built lakeside camps for architect Augustus D. Shepard, became Old Forge's first mayor in 1903, and built its first fire station in 1908. His son Robert lived in the house until 1994 and left it to the Town of Webb Historical Association, which operates it as a local history museum.","period_of_significance":"1899-1924","architect_builder":"George Goodsell (builder)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Vernacular Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Now used as a local history museum; the house and outbuildings are being restored and preserved, and the kitchen and rear wing were adapted for museum use in 2004.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.644927-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06000265.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000265/3f73f7a41a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000265/3f73f7a41a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"FollowerOfHank","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Goodsell_House,_Webb,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">FollowerOfHank</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Goodsell_House,_Webb,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"93001451","name":"New York Central Railroad Adirondack Division Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/new-york-central-railroad-adirondack-division-historic-district-93001451/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318136","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodsell_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5583606"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/herkimer-county/goodsell-house-06000265/"}
