It was built in 1901 by the short-line Unadilla Valley Railway.","why_significant":"The station is significant for its association with early twentieth-century rail transportation in central New York and as a highly intact example of vernacular, railroad-related architecture. It is unusual for having served two rail lines that were not physically connected, the Unadilla Valley Railway and the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad. It is described as a rare surviving example of its type and period in Oneida County.","narrative":"Built in 1901 beside US Route 20 in Bridgewater, this long, low timber frame depot served two railroads at the point where they met: the short-line Unadilla Valley Railway and the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western branch linking Utica with Richfield Springs. Under one roof it holds a passenger waiting room, a stationmaster's office and a large freight and baggage room. The office has a separate desk and bay window on each side, one for each line, with a single ticket window opening onto the shared waiting room. Exterior details include board siding, a scallop-sawed frieze and bracketed eaves. The station handled passengers, mail, milk and freight until service ended around 1960. Local businesses later used the building until the Bridgewater Historical Society bought it in 2003. It has seen few alterations and keeps its original woodstove and beadboard interior. It was listed for its role in regional rail history and its well-preserved design.","period_of_significance":"1901-1960","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"No style (vernacular railroad-related architecture)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current function listed as vacant/not in use; the Bridgewater Historical Society acquired it in 2003 and has begun restoring it as a community center.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.852178-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06000264.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000264/1f75929d72-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000264/1f75929d72-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Agreen54","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bridgewater_Railroad_Station.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Agreen54</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bridgewater_Railroad_Station.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320173","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridgewater_station_(New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706197"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/oneida-county/bridgewater-railroad-station-06000264/"}
