Stower arrived in Queensbury around 1788 or 1789 and became the town's first physician. He used his home as a rudimentary medical school and served 17 terms as Town Supervisor. After his death in 1848, the property passed to the Staples family, who added Greek Revival details around 1850, including corner pilasters and wide cornices with returns. An Italianate veranda followed in the 1870s. The foundation is local limestone, the walls are filled with brick nogging, and the roof is slate. Surviving outbuildings and features include a summer kitchen, stone hitching posts, a carriage mount, a stone wall and the ruins of a smokehouse. The house is recognized for its settlement-era associations and its layered architectural evolution.","period_of_significance":"1806-1870s","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a residence and bed and breakfast; it has been renovated and restored.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.593033-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06000261.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322807","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asa_Stower_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4803165"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/warren-county/stower-asa-house-06000261/"}
