Rotch.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an outstanding, well-preserved example of Davis's Gothic Revival \"cottage-villa\" designs and reflects his association with Andrew Jackson Downing. It was illustrated in Downing's 1850 Architecture of Country Houses and has become one of the most reproduced images of the Gothic Revival style. It was also built for one of New Bedford's most important industrial families.","narrative":"Completed in 1846, this Gothic Revival house at 19 Irving Street in New Bedford was designed by New York architect Alexander Jackson Davis for William J. Rotch, a member of a prominent local family. It has a hipped-roof block crossed by a steeply pitched central gable, a Tudor-arched entrance, an oriel window, carved verge boards and diamond-paned casement windows. The frame is heavy timber, sheathed in flush horizontal boards. The house was moved back on its lot in 1908 and placed on a new granite foundation, and a rear wing was removed. Later changes include added dormer gables and rebuilt chimneys, but much original interior and exterior fabric remains. The house matters because it shows Davis's work in the Gothic cottage mode and his informal partnership with Andrew Jackson Downing. It appeared in Downing's 1850 Architecture of Country Houses and is widely used as an illustration of the style. It remains a private residence.","period_of_significance":"1846","architect_builder":"Davis, Alexander Jackson (1803-1892)","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still a private single-family residence, not open to the public; moved back on its lot in 1908 and altered in some details over time.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:11:54.973272-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/51/7936/63793651/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/06000236_NHL.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000236/26e8f67e3a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000236/26e8f67e3a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewBedfordMA_RotchCottage_Front.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NewBedfordMA_RotchCottage_Front.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"76000229","name":"County Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/massachusetts/county-street-historic-district-76000229/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63793651","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_J._Rotch_Gothic_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8013326"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/bristol-county/rotch-william-j-gothic-cottage-06000236/"}
