It was built ca. 1896 as a Queen Anne style house for Dr. Edward Buncombe Goelet and enlarged and converted to an inn in 1914.","why_significant":"The property is eligible under Criterion A in the area of Entertainment/Recreation as an inn from Saluda's heyday as a railroad-fed summer resort in the early twentieth century. It was one of the last large inns established in the town and operated longer than its contemporaries. The period of significance covers its expansion in 1914 and its active operation as an inn through 1956.","narrative":"Built around 1896 on a wooded lot at the foot of Smith's Hill, this Saluda building began as a Queen Anne style home for Dr. Edward Buncombe Goelet, the town's first physician and druggist. In 1914 Louisa Leland acquired it and hired local builder Luther Thompson to add a large rear block, enclose porches and open it as an inn. Those changes, along with asphalt shingle siding added about 1946, gave the building its present Colonial Revival appearance, though original weatherboards, fireplaces, beaded board and other early features survive inside and out. Saluda grew as a summer resort after the railroad arrived, drawing families from the Carolina lowlands and farther south. The Charlton Leland was among the last of the large inns established there and outlasted its contemporaries, surviving the Depression and the rise of automobile tourism. Its role in that resort economy, between 1914 and 1956, is the basis for its listing.","period_of_significance":"1914-1956","architect_builder":"Thompson, Luther - builder","architectural_style":"Queen Anne; Colonial Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Currently used as a hotel/inn (known as the Saluda Inn); the form lists current function as DOMESTIC/hotel.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.014794-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/72/7218/47721872/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/06000225.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000225/d08970c391-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000225/d08970c391-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bigskybill","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charlton_Leland.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bigskybill</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charlton_Leland.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721872","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlton_Leland","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19720604"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/polk-county/charlton-leland-06000225/"}
