Its gardens are significant as the work of landscape architect Charles Gillette. It is also tied to E. Hervey Evans, a Laurinburg business and civic leader who helped bring new industry to the county and served church and community causes.","narrative":"Built in 1939 on West Church Street in Laurinburg, this two-and-one-half-story brick house follows the Georgian Revival style, modeled on eighteenth-century plantation homes along Virginia's James River. It has a five-bay central block with two recessed wings, Flemish bond brickwork, a slate roof and a central-hall plan with paneled rooms and eighteenth-century mantels. The grounds include a brick garage, a smokehouse, a pierced brick wall with wrought iron gate, and terraced gardens designed by Richmond landscape architect Charles Gillette. John A. Weaver was the architect. The house was built for E. Hervey Evans, a Laurinburg businessman who led local oil, fertilizer and insurance companies, helped bring new industry to Scotland County, and supported the hospital, library, a college and his church. After standing vacant for some years, the property was sold in 1999, restored and now operates as a bed and breakfast inn. Later additions include a pool, gazebo and pump house.","period_of_significance":"1939-1956","architect_builder":"Weaver, John A., architect; Gillette, Charles, landscape architect","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival (Georgian Revival)","criteria":["B","C"],"status_note":"Operates as a bed and breakfast inn after restoration and updating following several years of vacancy; the form also lists the current function as single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:54.367912-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/41/7222/47722241/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/06000224.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000224/17489fd459-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000224/17489fd459-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hervey_Evans_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hervey_Evans_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722241","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._Hervey_Evans_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19946167"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/scotland-county/evans-e-hervey-house-06000224/"}
