It is also significant for architecture as a surviving example of vernacular design and construction by a local builder.","narrative":"Congregation Tifereth Israel Synagogue, at 519 Fourth Street in Greenport, is a modest wood-frame house of worship built in 1903-1904 for a congregation formed in 1900. Stirling Corwin, a local carpenter, built the twenty-by-thirty foot sanctuary for $1,130 on a concrete foundation with locust support beams. Round-arched windows with Star of David motifs, white bead board and wainscoting, and a women's balcony define the plain Victorian vernacular design. Additions from the 1920s, 1964 and 2000-2001 added a social hall, kitchen and Hebrew School space while leaving the sanctuary's original form intact. A ritual bath found in the basement during construction has been preserved. The building is the only synagogue in Greenport and records the arrival of Jewish families, many of them shopkeepers and peddlers, on Long Island's North Fork from the late nineteenth century. It remains an active center for worship and public community events, and was also designated a local landmark in 2004.","period_of_significance":"1903-1955","architect_builder":"Stirling Corwin","architectural_style":"Late Victorian (described as Victorian Vernacular)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a synagogue, serving approximately 75 North Fork families; designated a local historic landmark in 2004.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.305606-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/06000161.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000161/afb58b8632-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000161/afb58b8632-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Americasroof","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tifferth-israel.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Americasroof</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tifferth-israel.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322071","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Congregation_Tifereth_Israel_(Greenport,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5160686"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/congregation-tifereth-israel-synagogue-06000161/"}
