It also reflects the growth of African American churches after Reconstruction, having begun in 1884 as an offshoot of Bank Street Baptist Church.","narrative":"Queen Street Baptist Church, at 413 Brambleton Avenue in Norfolk, is a brick Gothic Revival sanctuary built in 1910-1911 for an African American Baptist congregation. Architect Rossell Edward Mitchell gave it pointed-arch windows, limestone trim, a crenellated and stepped parapet, a slate roof and a spire. Inside, an open sanctuary has a balcony on iron columns and carved wood brackets, curved pews with foliate ends, and leaded stained glass showing apostles and religious figures. The congregation formed in 1884, when sixteen members left Bank Street Baptist Church, reportedly over seating divisions based on skin tone. A first church was built in 1885, and the new building replaced it in April 1911. Educational annexes were added in 1952 and 1957, and during the school closings of 1958 the annex served as classroom space for children shut out of public schools. The church is recognized for its architecture, its architect and its place in Norfolk's Black religious history.","period_of_significance":"1910-1911","architect_builder":"Rossell Edward Mitchell-architect","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; 1952 and 1957 annexes are attached to the church.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.012985-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/61/6821/41682161/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/06000141.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000141/afcda407c9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000141/afcda407c9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Amandajollota","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Queen_Street_Baptist_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Amandajollota</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Queen_Street_Baptist_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682161","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Street_Baptist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16899024"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/norfolk/queen-street-baptist-church-06000141/"}
