A 1984 rural survey of Sangamon County found only twelve Italianate houses, and this was one of only two brick examples. It retains strong exterior and interior integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1868 on land that was once part of a 500-acre grant awarded to the Ross family for service in the War of 1812, this two-story brick house stands on about three acres near Rochester, Illinois. It follows a compound plan, with a main block under a low-pitched hipped roof joined to a rear wing. Paired brackets with pendants and dentils decorate the cornice, and the front porch has square piers with Doric capitals. Inside, a curved walnut-railed staircase, classical door surrounds, marble and brick fireplaces and original trim survive. Most windows are original, and the floor plan is unchanged. The house is recognized for its architecture. A 1984 county survey found twelve Italianate houses in the area, and this was one of only two brick examples. It belongs to the simple-hipped subtype with a three-bay front, and it has kept more of its character than comparable houses, which have lost porches or been covered in siding. It remains a private home.","period_of_significance":"1868","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-dwelling residence; the form describes restoration work and updated plumbing, electrical, kitchen and bathrooms.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.125362-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/26/8940/28894026/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/06000092.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000092/61cce09296-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/06000092/61cce09296-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Boscophotos","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_Ross_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Boscophotos</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_Ross_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28894026","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Ross_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20710898"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/sangamon-county/ross-joseph-house-06000092/"}
