The core was built circa 1801 and expanded over several periods.","why_significant":"The house is significant under Criterion C because it shows the evolution of a rural Piedmont Virginia dwelling from Federal through Greek Revival, Italianate and Late Victorian details. It is significant under Criterion A for over two hundred years of continuous farm use. It was also the boyhood home of Confederate General and Congressman Eppa Hunton, and the Hunton family owned it from 1829 to 1902.","narrative":"Mount Hope is a farmhouse on about ten acres of rolling farmland north of New Baltimore in Fauquier County, Virginia. The two-and-a-half-story frame house began around 1801 in the Federal style and grew in at least four stages, picking up Greek Revival, Italianate and Late Victorian features. Its facade has unusual door and window surrounds with pediments and Greek key corner blocks, and a double-story porch. The Hunton family owned the property from 1829 to 1902 and farmed about 450 acres. Eppa Hunton, later a Confederate general and U.S. congressman, grew up here. The surviving farm buildings include a bank barn, machine shed, smokehouse, springhouse, shed, well and a walled family cemetery with eighteen Hunton graves. The property was recognized for its architectural evolution and for more than two centuries of continuous agricultural use, from early tobacco to wheat, grains and livestock.","period_of_significance":"circa 1801 - 1955","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Well preserved; the remaining land still supports cattle, poultry and a farm garden, and the bank barn, machine shed, smokehouse and springhouse are still in use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.287379-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/82/6805/41680582/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/05001625.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001625/e96a5e09bb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001625/e96a5e09bb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MOUNT_HOPE,_FAUQUIER_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680582","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Hope_(New_Baltimore,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712910"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/fauquier-county/mount-hope-05001625/"}
