It began in 1911 and was formally established on donated land in 1915.","why_significant":"The cemetery is eligible as a contributing resource associated with the adjacent 1898 church, which was listed in 2003 for its architecture. It originated with the 1911 burial of Andrew Johnston Bane and has since become the principal burial ground for the surrounding Big Walker Creek Valley. It also contains a range of twentieth-century memorial types and styles.","narrative":"Walker's Creek Cemetery occupies a terrace above Walker's Creek Presbyterian Church in Giles County, Virginia, at the foot of a wooded hillside with views across the Big Walker Creek Valley. It began in 1911 with the burial of Civil War veteran Andrew Johnston Bane on what was then a meadow on his farm. In 1915 his wife, Nannie Allen Bane, donated one acre to the church to establish the cemetery, which became the main burial ground for the valley. Low gray granite monuments with floral and geometric carvings predominate, alongside a few early white marble markers and motifs such as lambs, Masonic emblems and a caduceus. Norway spruces near the entrance were planted in 1947. The church deeded the cemetery to Walker's Creek Cemetery, Inc. in 1994, separating the ownership of the two properties. Because it is associated with the church, which was already listed, the cemetery was added through a boundary increase covering the original one-acre area.","period_of_significance":"1911-1955","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The cemetery remains in use and is owned separately from the church, having been deeded to Walker's Creek Cemetery, Inc. in 1994.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.965226-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/91/6808/41680891/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/05001622.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680891","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/giles-county/walkers-creek-presbyterian-church-boundary-increase-05001622/"}
