M. Fulton, with a surrounding historic stone retaining wall.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be significant under Criterion C for architecture because of its excellence of design and construction. It combines Queen Anne massing with Colonial Revival details and elaborate late-Victorian interiors. Such elaborate early-twentieth-century homes are rare in Wise County and the surrounding area.","narrative":"Standing at the center of the courthouse town of Wise in far southwestern Virginia, this red brick-veneered frame house was built in 1905 and 1906 for E. M. Fulton, a prominent lawyer and the eighth Commonwealth Attorney of Wise County. It rises two and a half stories on an eighteen-inch sandstone foundation, with seven brick gables, three dormers, a deck roof and a front porch with paired Doric columns. Queen Anne massing is combined with Colonial Revival details such as quoins, dentil trim and heavy window lintels. Inside, original oak and pine woodwork, pocket doors, stained glass windows and eight coal-burning fireplaces with individual mantels survive. A crenelated sandstone retaining wall, described as unique to the town and county, surrounds the lot. The house was listed for its architectural quality and for the rarity of such elaborate early twentieth-century residences in the coalfield region. It remains a single-family home and has survived largely intact beside a busy intersection.","period_of_significance":"1905-1956","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Queen Anne / Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling, with a contributing stone retaining wall; described as remarkably intact after a century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.466315-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/74/6841/41684174/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/05001581.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001581/6f938f062f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001581/6f938f062f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jhb 10s","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E._M._Fulton_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jhb 10s</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:E._M._Fulton_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41684174","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E._M._Fulton_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5322032"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/wise-county/fulton-e-m-house-05001581/"}
