Two high-style Italianate buildings from the 1860s-70s survive with remarkable integrity. The streetscape has changed little since about 1952.","narrative":"Old River Road Historic District occupies a short stretch of the Flats on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River in downtown Cleveland. Nine contributing buildings and one non-contributing building, plus a parking lot, line both sides of the street between St. Clair and Main Avenues. All were built for commercial or industrial use, stand one to five stories tall, and have brick exteriors. The oldest date from around 1860 to the 1870s, including two high-style Italianate buildings with cast iron storefront piers, round-arched windows and bracketed cornices. The largest, a five-story warehouse of 1916, was designed by Christian, Schwarzenberg & Gaede for the Stone Brothers. The district was listed for its link to Cleveland's maritime trade, where ship chandlers, sail lofts and marine suppliers operated near the canal, rail and lake routes, and for its intact, cohesive streetscape that has changed little since about 1952.","period_of_significance":"1868-1955","architect_builder":"Christian Schwarzenberg & Gaede (Cleveland); Bolt-Lowe Construction built 1235 Old River Road","architectural_style":"Late Victorian Italianate; 19th & 20th Century Vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Buildings remain in commercial use, including a marine supply business serving maritime trade and a theater; one parcel is a parking lot.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.533957-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/05001574.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"82003558","name":"Cleveland Warehouse District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/cleveland-warehouse-district-82003558/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987820","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/cuyahoga-county/old-river-road-historic-district-05001574/"}
