Thurmon.","why_significant":"The courthouse is argued to be an excellent early 20th century Classical Revival courthouse, and the jail a utilitarian companion. Both are significant locally under Criterion A for government and Criterion C for architecture. Built after rail lines brought growth, they replaced an earlier combined courthouse and jail on the square, and the courthouse remains the political center of the county.","narrative":"Completed in 1912, the Franklin County Courthouse and Jail stand on the north side of the public square in Mount Vernon, Texas. Architect L.L. Thurmon designed both buildings in sandstone. The courthouse is a three-story Classical Revival building with Tuscan-columned, pedimented porticoes on two sides and an octagonal domed clock and bell tower. Inside, a central corridor and double stair lead to a second-floor district courtroom, restored in 1989 with its pressed tin ceiling and art glass skylight. The adjacent two-story jail is plainer, with a modified hip roof and original barred windows. The buildings replaced an 1870s courthouse and jail built after Mount Vernon won the county seat election in 1875, and they followed the growth brought by railroads in the late 1880s. Their selection of design and financing was controversial among county commissioners. The courthouse still serves county government, while the jail now holds offices and, upstairs, preserved cells.","period_of_significance":"1912-1955","architect_builder":"L.L. The jail moved to new facilities in 1993; its first floor houses county agricultural offices and the upper floor, with cells intact, is vacant but planned for an arts group.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:24.188437-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/78/9719/40971978/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/05001542.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001542/affcd9be29-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001542/affcd9be29-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Michael Barera","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mount_Vernon_May_2018_17_(Franklin_County_Courthouse).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Barera</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mount_Vernon_May_2018_17_(Franklin_County_Courthouse).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40971978","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_County_Courthouse_and_Jail","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55612003"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/franklin-county/franklin-county-courthouse-and-jail-05001542/"}
