The house was built in 1846.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be significant under Criterion C as a remarkably intact example of mid-nineteenth century I-house design and construction. It also embodies distinct characteristics of the Federal style. It retains its original plan, detailed woodwork and thick sandstone walls with little modern alteration.","narrative":"Set on a hilltop in rural Yellow Creek Township, this farmstead centers on a two-story sandstone house completed in 1846 for Daniel McBean. Datestones on the front facade credit Daniel McKay and A. McKay as the builders. The five-bay house follows the I-house form, with a central hall, staircase and two rooms on each floor, plus an original one-story kitchen wing at the rear. Walls of tooled sandstone are two feet thick, and the Federal-style front door has a webbed fanlight and sidelights under a sandstone arch. Inside, each room has a fireplace with a distinct wooden mantle, built-in cabinetry and paneled window treatments, and the open-string staircase has scroll-carved risers. Later changes are limited to electricity, some plumbing and replaced windows. A hand-hewn barn with mortise-and-tenon framing also contributes. The property was listed for its architecture as an unusually intact mid-nineteenth century I-house, and records suggest it stayed in the McBean family for about 120 years.","period_of_significance":"1846-1850","architect_builder":"Daniel McKay and A. McKay (builders); erected by Daniel McBean","architectural_style":"Other: I-house; Early Republic: Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling. The rear porch is deteriorated, and the barn exterior has been altered with metal and board-and-batten siding.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.218161-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/05001518.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001518/02201bdfea-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001518/02201bdfea-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Roseohioresident","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_McBean_Farmstead_2012-07-13.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Roseohioresident</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_McBean_Farmstead_2012-07-13.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987206","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_McBean_Farmstead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5218084"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/columbiana-county/mcbean-daniel-farmstead-05001518/"}
