It is one of six known teacherages in Wake County, of which four survive, and it has changed little since 1947 apart from exterior alterations that have been reversed.","narrative":"Built circa 1925 as a two-story Craftsman house of red brick on East Academy Street in Fuquay-Varina, the building was bought by the Wake County Board of Education in 1945 and used as a teacherage, or housing for teachers, until 1968. A 1947 addition, built by A. Y. Hairr for $7,394, more than doubled its size and added a foyer with an open-string stair and a central hall of bedrooms with shared bathrooms. The house remains largely unaltered in its exterior brick, original double-hung wood windows, plaster walls, beaded-board ceilings and wood floors. Its significance lies in its link to school consolidation in the early to mid twentieth century, when rural and town school districts provided housing to attract qualified teachers. The building is one of six known teacherages in Wake County, and four of those six still stand. Its layout, with a common kitchen, shared baths and joint living spaces, records how teachers lived in these arrangements.","period_of_significance":"1945-1955","architect_builder":"Hairr, A.
