It is a late-Federal vernacular interpretation of the Wren-Gibbs church form. It is the only one of Hudson's two parish churches still on its original site, and it has long been a landmark in the Middle Island community.","narrative":"Built in 1837 on Middle Country Road in Middle Island, this wood-frame church was the second house of worship for the Middle Island Presbyterian congregation, which dated to 1766. Carpenter Isaac Hudson built it for $1,600, raised by subscription, and it closely resembles his earlier South Haven church. Both follow a vernacular version of the Wren-Gibbs plan, with a rectangular body, projecting entrance and Federal details such as modillions and multi-light windows with Georgian-style transoms. The Middle Island building is the only one still on its original site. A tower and octagonal steeple were added in 1863, and a two-story rear addition followed in 1935. The Presbyterians moved to a new sanctuary in 1966, leaving the building vacant for a time before the Middle Island Christian Fellowship took possession in 1977. That congregation runs a day care center, mediation, job and tutoring programs there, so the church continues to serve as a community center.","period_of_significance":"1836-1955","architect_builder":"Isaac Hudson","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently owned and operated by a Christian fellowship congregation, which uses it for worship and community service programs including a day care center.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.855388-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05001388.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001388/0606c7b680-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001388/0606c7b680-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Middle_Island_Presbyterian_Church.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Middle_Island_Presbyterian_Church.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322176","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_Island_Presbyterian_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6841473"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/middle-island-presbyterian-church-05001388/"}
