It is also tied to the Laflin family, who were prosperous farmers and gunpowder manufacturers active in town affairs, and to the Phelps family, who farmed it from 1865 onward.","narrative":"Set on a low rise on the east side of Southwick Center, this Federal-style farmhouse is a 2½-story, five-bay building with a front-gable roof, clapboard siding and quoins at the corners. The south and west entrances have fanlight surrounds, and the gable holds an oval oculus with filigree glazing. Inside, a modified center-hall plan includes carved and reeded Federal mantels, rope-molded woodwork, red pine floors and a kitchen fireplace with crane and bake oven. A rear ell and attached carriage shed were added in the nineteenth century, and a privy, milk house, equipment barn and barn foundations survive nearby. The Laflin family, prosperous farmers whose members also made gunpowder, built and enlarged the homestead; Heman Laflin Jr. served in the state legislature in 1855. Marcus Phelps bought the farm in 1865, and his descendants continued farming it. The property is valued for its intact architecture and its complete farmstead setting, which keeps much of its nineteenth-century rural character.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling with agricultural outbuildings; the English-style barn was demolished in 2004, leaving its stone foundations.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.620546-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/61/7951/63795161/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/05001371.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001371/30bde915fa-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001371/30bde915fa-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Laflin-Phelps_Homestead,_Southwick_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Laflin-Phelps_Homestead,_Southwick_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795161","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laflin-Phelps_Homestead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6471705"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/hampden-county/laflin-phelps-homestead-05001371/"}
