It has an original one-room section and a later one-room addition on the west end.","why_significant":"The school is argued to be significant under Criterion A for its role in the education and ethnic history of the local Black community, which it served from the 1880s to the mid-1950s. It is also significant under Criterion C as one of a few surviving late 19th to early 20th century rural schools in the region. It is unusual for being built of frame rather than log, and it has remained largely unaltered.","narrative":"Rock Run School is a one-story frame schoolhouse west of Fieldale in Henry County, Virginia, built around 1880 to serve the African American community of Rock Run. It began as a single classroom and later gained a smaller addition on its west end, each section with its own vestibule, cloakroom and classroom. Pine board interiors, beveled weatherboards, diagonal wall sheathing and a hand-crimped tin roof survive. The land and building passed to the county school trustees in 1882, and the school operated as a segregated school until consolidation in the mid-1950s. Parents likely supplied labor and materials, and former students recall benches, secondhand desks and shared books. Frame construction was unusual among rural schools of the era, which were mostly log. The building has not been significantly altered, though its foundation has deteriorated and it now stands vacant. It is recognized for its role in Black education and as a rare surviving rural schoolhouse.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1880- ca. 1955","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: Late 19th-early 20th century vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacant and not in use; in overall poor condition, with a subsided fieldstone foundation and missing window glass and sashes, but unaltered and considered promising for restoration.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:03.053529-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/87/6812/41681287/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/05001268.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001268/abd348376a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001268/abd348376a-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rock_Run_School_property.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rock_Run_School_property.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681287","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Run_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7354667"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/henry-county/rock-run-school-05001268/"}
