It holds 32 contributing and 9 non-contributing resources, mostly dwellings from about 1880 to 1910.","why_significant":"The district is significant under Criterion C for architecture. It preserves a largely intact late-19th and early-20th-century railroad crossroads community with little modern construction. Its resources include I-houses, a stone stave mill, a country store, a Gothic Revival parish hall and a tiny post office.","narrative":"Casanova grew up in the 1850s where Rogues Road met the Warrenton Branch Railroad, a spur of the Orange and Alexandria line. It was first known as Three Mile Station. The historic district covers about 32 acres around the crossroads and contains 41 resources, 32 of them contributing. Most are frame dwellings from about 1880 to 1910, many of them I-houses with central front gables and Late Victorian detail. The oldest building is a two-story stone mill of 1879, built by local builder George Holtzclaw for the Wetmores. It made barrel staves until 1918 and became a house in 1947. Other landmarks include the 1906 Cowhig store, a Gothic Revival parish hall for Grace Episcopal Church, a Tudor Revival rectory, a former school, and a garage of roughly 12 by 18 feet that has housed the post office since 1956. Little modern construction has intruded, so the village keeps its early-20th-century character.","period_of_significance":"1879-1955","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival; Other: I-house; Commercial","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The former store is closed, the post office still operates in a small garage, and the mill, school and rectory have been converted to dwellings. The railroad is now used only by a quarry company.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.887712-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/7/6806/41680607/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/05001264.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001264/fb05014c20-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001264/fb05014c20-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cecouchman","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CasanovaVA_4873.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cecouchman</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:CasanovaVA_4873.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680607","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casanova_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712137"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/fauquier-county/casanova-historic-district-05001264/"}
