It is the only surviving structure of the former coal town of Virginia City.","why_significant":"The church was built by coal camp residents on land donated by the Russell Creek Coal Company and was open to preachers of any denomination. It also served as the community's first schoolhouse. It is eligible under Criterion A in the areas of Religion and Education.","narrative":"Built around 1895 on a hillside in Wise County, Virginia, this small whitewashed frame church measures 20 by 32 feet. It has a front gable roof, a square bell tower, a diamond-shaped window in each gable end and a single entrance with folding paneled doors. Inside are flush-board walls and ceiling, pine floors, old pews and two pianos. Local craftsmen built it for the coal camp residents of Virginia City, on land donated by the Russell Creek Coal Company. It also served as the town's first schoolhouse, and anyone was welcome to preach there, so many denominations used it. Missionary Mary S. Martin took over the neglected building in 1922 and used it as a base to start more chapels. The mining town later faded, and the church is the only structure left from it. It has been moved short distances for mining and road work, and it is currently not in use.","period_of_significance":"1895-1955","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"no style (traditional vernacular)","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant and not in use; the Mary Martin Memorial Church holds the deed and is working to maintain its historic character. The building has been moved at least twice, never more than 200-300 yards.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:02.995249-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/2/6842/41684202/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/05001263.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001263/4a52c241df-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001263/4a52c241df-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"James Shelton32","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Virginia_City_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">James Shelton32</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Virginia_City_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41684202","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_City_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7934186"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/wise-county/virginia-city-church-05001263/"}
