The house was built in 1874.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an outstanding local example of Second Empire residential design at a modest cottage scale. It shows the style's mansard roof, Picturesque details and light wood framing. It was later home to Gilbert Millspaugh, whose father founded the Millspaugh Furniture Company in 1858.","narrative":"Built in 1874 on the west side of Church Street in the Village of Walden, this two-story frame house with a mansard roof shows the Second Empire style at a modest, cottage scale. It has a square footprint, clapboard siding, a stone foundation faced with brick, and a steep mansard covered in square and diamond-shaped shingles. Bracketed cornices, dormers with round-headed windows, original louvered shutters and a porch with scroll-sawn details add Picturesque character. Inside, the original pine floors, plaster cornices and medallions, four-panel doors, a marble mantel and the turned newel post and balusters remain. A carriage barn is also part of the property. The house was begun for Richard T. Masten and his wife, probably by a local contractor working from a published pattern book. Gilbert Millspaugh, whose father founded a furniture company in Walden, lived there from 1895 to 1905. It was listed for its architectural value as a middle-class example of the style.","period_of_significance":"1874","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Second Empire","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; original pine flooring, plasterwork, doors, hardware and one marble mantel survive, plus a small non-historic rear addition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:53.05733-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05001216.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001216/cc64d0e4ae-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001216/cc64d0e4ae-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gilbert_Millspaugh_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gilbert_Millspaugh_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320692","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilbert_Millspaugh_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5561117"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/millspaugh-glibert-house-05001216/"}
