It was converted to a library in 1917 and enlarged with a rear addition in 1920.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant in education and social history for its link to the welfare programs of the Endicott Johnson Company, which helped found and support the library. It is also significant as a largely intact example of late nineteenth century residential architecture designed by Truman I. Lacey, whose original character survived the library conversion.","narrative":"Your Home Library occupies a brick house at 107 Main Street in Johnson City, New York. Built in 1885 for local industrialist Elijah Brigham and designed by architect Truman I. Lacey, it features a turret, a multi-gabled roof and irregular rooms that flow into one another. The Endicott Johnson Company acquired the house in 1916, and the library opened in 1917 through Harry L. Johnson and the Johnson City Literary Society, a women's group founded in 1913. Alterations were modest: a wraparound porch, partly enclosed as a reading room, and shelving fitted into the existing rooms. A larger rear wing, added in 1920, provided a children's room and meeting space, and matches the original in scale and materials. The company supported the library until the village bought it in 1938. The grounds include a memorial to Harry L. Johnson. The property is significant for its role in company-sponsored education and community life, and as an intact late nineteenth century residence still used as a public library.","period_of_significance":"1885-1955","architect_builder":"T.I.
