It is significant under Criterion C as a turn-of-the-twentieth-century eclectic commercial building. It is also a rare survivor of the village's commercial past after other commercial structures were demolished.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of Main and East Main Streets in Port Jefferson, this brick building was constructed between 1900 and 1902 as the home of the First National Bank. Albert and Gilbert Loper built it, with E.O. Lawrence doing the stonework. It has a two-story corner turret with a cone-shaped slate roof, recessed arcades holding large windows, brick pilasters, eyebrow windows and a low-hipped slate roof. Upper-floor offices were rented to professionals. The bank merged with another local bank in 1948, and the Town of Brookhaven bought the building for a tax office and police space, adding a one-story brick wing around 1949. The town left in 2003, and the Port Jefferson Historical Society then sought to save the building for museum use. It is valued for its role in the village's commerce and local government and as one of the few commercial buildings left from the shipbuilding era.","period_of_significance":"1900-1955","architect_builder":"Loper Brothers Builders, Port Jefferson","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Victorian Eclectic","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed current function is vacant; the Town of Brookhaven moved its offices out by 2003 and the local historical society hopes to use the building as a museum.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:54.068899-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05001134.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001134/3717ab306c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001134/3717ab306c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DanTD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Port_Jefferson_1st_National_Bank.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Port_Jefferson_1st_National_Bank.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322108","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_National_Bank_of_Port_Jefferson","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453413"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/first-national-bank-of-port-jefferson-05001134/"}
