It was built by a local building committee, with a builder identified as Mr. Peet.","why_significant":"The church is a distinctive, intact example of a vernacular Greek Revival church, the most popular form of church building in central New York in the mid-nineteenth century. It also reflects the development of the hamlet, since it was conceived as a non-denominational building used by Methodists, Episcopalians and Universalists and became a center of community social life.","narrative":"Rockdale Community Church is a small wood-frame church completed in 1860 at the center of the hamlet of Rockdale, in the town of Guilford, Chenango County. It is one story, three bays wide and three deep, with clapboard siding, a stone foundation, a gable roof, wide corner boards, a raking cornice and an over-scaled trabeated entrance surround. Sixty-eight local subscriptions paid for the $1,200 building, which was attributed to a Mr. Peet of Otsdawa, with the since-removed steeple built by Stanley Skinner and his brother. Inside, the sanctuary keeps original moldings, doors and a rear gallery, along with late nineteenth-century additions such as a pressed-metal ceiling, altar furniture and eight memorial stained-glass windows. The congregation was founded as non-denominational and served Methodists, Episcopalians and Universalists, while banning shows and political meetings. It was listed as a well-preserved example of Greek Revival church design and for its role in the hamlet's community life.","period_of_significance":"1860-1949","architect_builder":"Peet (no first name), builder, church; Stanley Skinner and brother, builder, steeple","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; the form lists current function as religious facility.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:52.747389-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/05001128.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001128/a80afe32eb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/05001128/a80afe32eb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, New York, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rockdale_Community_Church_Rockdale_NY_May_11.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, New York, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rockdale_Community_Church_Rockdale_NY_May_11.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316898","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockdale_Community_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7355018"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chenango-county/rockdale-community-church-05001128/"}
